Chlortetracycline Hydrochloride is a tetracycline antibiotic. Chlortetracycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex. The interference disrupts the translation process and inhibits bacterial growth.
This antibiotic offers a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It also forms complexes with calcium, magnesium, aluminum, and iron, leading to reduced absorption.
Additionally, it is useful to study bacterial susceptibility patterns or as a selective agent in culture media to isolate bacteria that are sensitive to this antibiotic.
